It's nice to be missed.

It's been a little crazy around here -- more than usual -- but good. Last week Tuesday I was the "guest chef" at the student cafeteria of a local college. I came up with recipes, placed the order, prepped and cooked stir fry to order with three different sauces and two protiens. I did 238 plates in two and a half hours. It was my first production experience, and it was even more of a rush than I thought it would be. It was amazing!

Then on Wednesday, I got a call telling me I was a finalist in a beaujolais recipe contest I entered (marinated grilled quail with beaujolais sage demi cream sauce, truffled mashed yukon golds and sauteed spinach). I had to come in to downtown Chicago the following morning and cook my food, wait for the judging and speed all the way to Milwaukee to barely catch my flight for a business trip in Orlando. Over 200 entries, 15 finalists, came in fourth, top three got scholarships. Oh, well.

And by the way, Spike, I just turned 37. That ain't young.

Thanks, Manny. Alas, I didn't win -- my quail didn't stand up very well to the grill and I had to take my potatoes off heat and put them back on again when I was forced to switch kitchens in the middle of cooking and they were gluey. It was fun, though.
