There is talk at school by facilty of creating a competition team. I'm mulling it over if I should try out or not. Would it be worthwhile?

I never joined our competition team because it took more time than I had to give. But I had friends who were on it and they said it was a blast and a great learning experience.

Sometimes political, depending on the judges!
They can be a-----!
Or it can be extremely gratifying and rewarding!
