Interesting photo essay in today's (3/26/05) New York Times magazine about chefs and their tattoos that pay homage to their love of food and cooking. Check it out.
How many of you have tattoos of the culinary bent?
I don't have any tattoos-but I do have alot of scars from the blasted oven racks....does that classify as Culinary markings?
Her is the link.
Chef d'Oeuvres
I don't wear any ink but the article is interesting.
Shiver, can't stand those things, must have something in my childhood, like helping an 80 yr old grandfather with 60 yr old tatoos out of the tub. Kinda made a lasting impression on me...
It's my opinion that Kitchen Scars should be included in the Culinary Marking category, only seems right!!
"Branding is the new tattoo", and chefs & cooks just got a jump on the trend. it's more a guy thing, but I've seen many chefs compare scars. the older guy says "look, I've been at this so long & I have the scars to prove it" and the younger guy says "what I lack in longevity I made up for in quantity- LOOK at all these scars!"
I also have no ink. always wanted it, but I haven't decided what's worth the permanence!
I like tat's, just not on me.
I have some.
This one, the girl is...no wait, can't say that here.
Oh!, this other one, no...can't
Oh!Oh!Oh! This one is great! This Dame is COOKING!, just not in the regular sence.
Yea, I don't have any tats about cooking either.
so that's not a loaf of bread tatt'd on your arse?
Wow! I like tats on other people, but that one under the lip! OUCH!!! The radish was cool and the corn was really pretty. Sausage? I don't think so. Very interesting, thanks for the link.
Did you notice that four of the tats were on a girl, including PORK on the inside of her lower lip.
Yeah, and the same girl. Hmmmm...I wonder what she holds close to her heart :-)
Now Ladycake! Reminds me of when the Chef remarked: "You've held hotter things in your hand" as the cute little waitress scorched her fingers on a french onion soup bowl. After a moments contemplation the said waitress responded:"I don't think like that!"...
Pork.
On her lip.
On the inside.
Whats the point?
No one sees it unless you curl the damn thing down everytime you wanna show someone.
Maybe it has nothing to do with "food"
Ya ever think about that?
Uh?
Maybe if she ate with a clear spoon, and pushed her lip out everytime she pulled the spoon out, more poeple would see it.
Here in LaLa land, "pork" has a whole different meaning, baby.
Huh! What's the sense of pierced nipples, gentilia or that crappy black tattooing on the small of the back, just above the cheeks?
Hey, how about earplugs? Not ear rings, no, these are plugs, ranging from 1/4" to 3/4" in diameter stuffed into the earlobes. Then there's body scarring that's done on purpose, you know, neat designs etched onto your arm or whatever. I Swear, if my kids ever get tattoos, they're comming off with a belt sander...
ouch!!!
I think the female chef w/ all the tats... ugly. Those pics of her arms... look like a man
do a google search of tatoos, what you saw on that site is calm compared to whats out there.
you should see whats in LA.
I saw a guy today at trader joes with those ear plug things.
they were 2" across, and he had big silver rods in his nose.
I gotta start looking at chefs in rest's before I eat there, I don't want a chef or cooks cooking for me with all that crap pierced in their bodies.
I just don't see how its clean.
Yeah, nose rings and drippy noses, but it's the pierced private parts that get to me. Must be some kind of S & M thing I guess. Wonder if a pierced couple can magnetize themselves?..
yikes!
there should be some kind of a law about those things in the culinary field.
but just on the face, and ears.
what people do with their private parts is no concern of mine.
as long as it does not show up on my plate.
now there's an incentive to diet...
lmao Torte...
Yo, Snuff, what does Imao mean?
LMAO
laughing my a$$ off
I have tats and plenty of battle scars. I once worked with a guy who had the Henkels "twins" tattooed very small on the inside of his upper arm. I thought that was kind of neat, however I would prefer a trident.
ChefSpike, Consider that people who dont get trendy tattoo's might just get them for thier own personal pleasure. I have a few tattoo's which are almost always covered aside from summertime at the beach nobody see's my ink. Its for me to look at and to please myself not for others to look at and pass judgement about me before even knowing anything else I am about.
Tats...
Think of your most favorite cherished possesion, a car, tropical fish, stereo, or what ever. Now imagine coming home from work one day to find that someone had broken into your place and spray-painted that possesion with neon puce/magenta colored paint. Graffiti, right?
That's what tattoos are, body graffiti, except they can't come off. Well, maybe with 80 grit sand paper on a belt sander, but I digress...
The only markings I have on my hands and arms are scars from cuts and burns.
No, I don't have any brands of Dragons on my arms like Quai Chang Cain either.
My feelings about tattoos are best summarised in the article, Tattoos in the Bible.
I wouldn't mind a trident on my arm acctually though...
How cool. Thanks for the link. Nothing like new Tattoo ideas. I even have a Christmas gift certificate here to one om my fav tattoo artist.

In a few years, that ear of corn is gonna look more like creamed corn!
It's irrational, I know, but to a lot of people, including me, I'm afraid, tattoos = bikers = grimy. We have dear friends who are bikers and are as clean as we are, but the prejudice remains. So I wouldn't want to see 'em in the kitchen.
For a real eye-opener, trott off to an old folk's home. See what a 60 yr old tattoo looks like on a 80 yr old arm....
It looks like creamed corn!
I have a tattoo on my right upper arm of a skull with an eye patch over the right eye socket and crossed up clever and cooks knife underneath it.
One chef I worked for had a lot of tattoos, but were not readily visible while he was at work. He told me when I went to get my first one, two things: 1.) Don't get it on your face, neck, hands, or forearm. If I end up firing you at some point and you have to go interview for another job, who's gonna hire you if you look like a thug cook?" 2.) "Don't cry...Girls get tats too!"
Adelie,
Until now, I always liked creamed corn! Now, I'll never enjoy another bowl of creamed corn again!
Good lord, Anda, how long did it take you to put that post together??? At least as long as it would take to read it, I'm sure...
Adelie,
Well, that post took a long time, as most of my posts usually do. I tried to interject some humor in that post as well.
If you read my previous posts dating back to 2000, you'll notice that I was more "verbose, but thorough," in those posts. I had even left this forum a while back, intending never to return, but alas, I have briefly returned.
Nonetheless, I will always like creamed corn inspite of the unpleasant mental imagery of mottled, sagging, aged, wrinkled skin, and faded tattoos.
How do you like those pasty white, wrinkly breakfst snausages?....
