Is tipping a PC customary in the US?

I believe I just committed a faux pas but would like your opinions. I recently hired a personal chef and was pleased with the whole process. After she left I wondered whether I should have given her a monetary tip. Nothing I'd read or heard about PC's mentioned it so it didn't occur to me (until now). Her brochures and such also didn't say anything about it - not even to say something like "service not included".

Anyway, I certainly would pay a tip if it is customary but I don't want to start obligating myself to paying one if it's not. I'd appreciate any suggestions from PC's or PC customers. If one is appropriate then I could easily send a thank you card and a tip.

Mike,
If the duties involved preperation and presentation, there should be no gratuity. If the duties include any type of table service or passing than I think a tip is in order.
I believe it is also politically correct to ask if tipping is appropriate if your dealing with the owner of the service.
