Quick backround first...I've only been in the industry for about 4 years. I have yet to receive a formal education. I have worked these last 4 years on a small cruise boat. I started as galley prep and basically apprenticed for 2 years learning quite alot and became head chef when she decided to take a season off. Sounds great but working with an established menu made things much easier. I now realise it's time for formal training. After researching institues vs. comm. colleges vs. other programs I'm confused to say the least. I reside in Missouri but will gladly relocate for the right school. Any suggestions on where to go and especially any info on scholarships, grants etc. would be greatly appreciated. I've already rack up about $12g form the days when i thought I wanted to major in biology!

Smart thinking, since you say you are from Missouri, I am assuming that you worked for Clipper Cruise Lines. I worked on similar ships my self 15 years ago. Any way, if you spend a couple of nights wading through all the previous posts especiall in Wannabe, Great Hall, CIA, ACF and J&W you will find a variety of opinions on Community College vs not for profit/private schools. (Money is a big factor with CC being a lot less expensive) One thing to consider since you already spent money towards a degree, you have a number of your gen-eds out of the way which will shortening your time at a CC. These classes will probably not count at a private school. I do not know exactly where you are in MO but if you live in the western section of the state the programm accross the river at Overland Park Kansas CC is top notch.
Find the closest local chapter of the American Culinary Federation (www.acfchefs.org) and see how they can help.
As far as scholarships, all the schools have spascific applications and information as does you local restaurant association. One catch is that most scholarchoips are fopr students right out of high school or you are not eligible until after a semester.
Many schools have webpages and you can do a lot of searching on the net. Best of luck,

i WOULD LIKE TO HELP A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT GET INTO CULLINARY SCHOOL. HOWEVER, SHE NEEDS HELP FINDING A SCHOLARSHIP. COULD YOU DIRECT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION SO SHE CAN START APPLYING FOR THEM NOW.
