Hi,
My pop is insisting that I get a bachelors degree and I know that the Johnson and Wales campuses at Providence and Miami both offer a BS in the Culinary Arts. I was wondering which campus would be better? My thinking would be that Miami would be better due to the amount of great restaurants there. Has anyone graduated from either of these programs, or worked with graduates.? When you graduate are you prepared to work as a sous chef, or do you start at a lower rung. I plan on working at a restaurant at night during school, so I hope to learn as much from that experience as I am at the school. Any information would be much appreciated.

well, i have graduated from that miami program - with an AA though and i have worked with graduates in the past- already had a bachelors degree in another discipline. just like any job or field, experience always counts and to back that up a great attitude. School is good,as for getting a position a s a sous chef, it is possible. i think in most cases, it is going to depend on the need of the person(s) who is hiring and how well u sell yourself. after getting out of school i got a job as a sous chef. but make sure it's a good fit. i wanted to work under a really good chef, it hasn't happened yet but i have still learned a lot. my advice, if u can don't just work in any restaurant, do a little research, it will help. later man

Jmb- You might really want to consider Miami. I
don't know where you are from but Providence
is not a place you want to live. Also, JW is
expensive for what you get. Experience is
everything.
JW has a good reputation but the curriculum is
bland and unispired to say the least. If the piece
of paper is important to your future career,
consider finding a niche player that is a bit
"unique" and can do more than teach you the most
basic aspects of cooking professionally.
