Hi, I have no culinary experience at all. I recently decided that I want to become a chef. I plan on attending a culinary school in a few years, but they want you to have some experience first. How do you go about getting an apprenticeship or some type of job without an previous experience.

Just go out there and apply for a job. Most home town restaurants will hire any breathing clean body. If you want to work some place fancy ask if you can work there (ie. wash their dishes, etc..) for free, just for the exposure. DON'T BE SCARED! Every place needs help...and many positions don't require experience.

Check out the American Culinary Federation as an alternative solution. They offer apprenticeship programs and it might even replace school. They're on the web.

Tms436:
I have have not found any culinary apprenticeships in Minnesota. However, according the ACF website: <http://acfchefs.orgdrctappr.html>,
Fox Valley Technical College does have a culinary apprenticeship program <http://www.foxvalley.tec.wi.us/tp2.asp?ID=Apprenticeships&pix=013>,
if you don't mind relocating to Appleton, Wisconsin.
However, if you're planning to stay in the Twin Cities Metro area, then look into:
Hennepin Technical College, Eden Campus: <http://www.hennepintech.edu>; and
Saint Paul College: <http://students.saintpaul.edu>.
Also, contact the ACF Minneapolis Chapter, Frances Jedneak CEC, (763)856-2216, <minneapolischefs@minneapolischefs.20m.com>
Good luck.
