I have been extremly busy with my catering and baquet faclities, that I haven't had much time to answer, but I think that Chris is being judged and convicted without a fair trial.
If he learnt something from that "pot throwing" experience, GOOD FOR HIM. If he throws anything ever again, I really think He should change professions.
It is so hard to get good staff and money isn't always the issue. A relaxed and pleasant working place is just as important.
Chris, take a step back and take a break. Deligate so as all the stress isn't completely on your shoulders.
You sound like a very caring individual but are overloaded.

I know I am adding in late in this discussion, but I think it's important that a different view be added. Touching is permitted under the harassment law. I give a solid hand to the shoulder of any cook or server who has done a good job. With servers I am unsure of I shake their hand and thank them. Both acts are short, and "Non lingering". As to throwing pots, I have worked for that "Chef" and I only use that term because once someone has earned the title, they should be called it. I often used to go home a dream of throwing something back at that drunk. When I am displeased with something I already have certain tasks outlined to assign ( I create the list at the beginning of the day). If you screw up badly, I or my sous will cover your station during service so that you can clean my 4 convection ovens, or clean the grease traps, or at the beginning of your next shift you will be cleaning one of my three walk ins (corner grout and all). My cooks and servers work hard to insure that none of them get these assignments. My Dishwasher prays for a screw up. I don't have to throw a pot, revenge is a great tool. As for the server/cook fight, Cooks need to be aware that this fight is older than cookbooks, and the cook never wins. there are ways to document the problems so that when they get numerous enough, the Chef/owner must act on your behalf. Make sure to inform the sous or chef at the down time after service on the day it occurs. Let them know that you feel that this behavior is hostile towards you. Keep a list of the occurances, whom you told, when and where you told them (office, walk-in, floor,...). Get a big enough list and then xerox it for the Chef/owner. They will act in your favor (anything else will set them up for allowing a hostile work environment).

I completly agree that is the best action, but sometimes we just lose it and bad things happen and some people think that violence is the only answer. I'm not talking about people that screw up badly once but the people who are having a bad day and takes it out on me and the other cooks or people that enjoy annoyinng me and takeing up my time.
