I haven't started schooling yet, and am still going through the regular questions as to if I really want to go or not. One question I have that noone seems to answer is, What's the income potential? I've been told that I can expect around 30k/yr starting off, but what about after that? 3yr later, or 5, 10?

By Grimod (Grimod) on Monday, June 17, 2002 - 05:05 pm: Edit

Good Afternoon!

The answer is it is like anything else in life... The more you put in and strive the more you can make. If you apply yourself, work determined, have a plan of what you ultimately want and go from there.

Starting? That Much? nah... It depends on the market in your area. Mostly likely 7 - 10 dollars an hour for awhile. Down the road as Sous Chef maybe 35 to 45 thousand. For a Chef... anywhere from unbelieveably low amounts (I got offered a job in my most recent wave of interviewing for 8.50 an hour. That is so far from what I normally make). Anyway a low of 30,000 to a high of anywhere from 50,000 to six figures... Private Chef positions can make ungodly sums of money...

I have to warn you, though. If your primary thought is how much money can I make you need to look for another career. In cooking, you have to find your happiness another way. It is too crazy of a job to be about money. You can't like it, you gotta love it.

Peace,

Grimod

If it isn't a passion with you,if you don't feel like you HAVE to "create" food, Grimod's advice is perfect.

Hey Corey,
You should put together a routine, and do some stand-up there in Vegas.
You've got some damn good lines.
