Questions about the job hunt?

WebFoodPros.com: The Great Hall: Questions about the job hunt?

Now that the spring semester is over I'm looking to leave my current job for a kithen position. I realize that I really don't have a lot of experience in a working kitchen. How can I over come this so I'll be considered for the job. I know that my references will be good and I can and will give 100 of myself for the job. Hell I don't care what I'm doing for the most part if I can learn in the process. Since I don't speak spainish, I'm taking it this fall to help myself in the kitchen.

Spanish is a great idea, Flattop. I'm picking mine up as I go, and life gets easier every shift as I learn more Spanish. I think any culinary school that doesn't require its students to take Spanish is cheating them.

What I found when I started calling chefs is that if you show them you won't cut off a digit on your first day and that you are willing to work and do what they ask, lack of kitchen experience isn't as much of a hinderance as you'd think. You won't wind up in a four-star place, and you won't be working the grill your first day, but you'd be amazed at what you can get if you only ask.

Good advise from Steve and Mike.
I live in S. FL. and my background is Spanish and Italian, my kid does not want to learn Spanish.
I showed him a special they did on the news about not being able to get a job if you don't speak a second language (spanish in Miami). Hopefully he got the mesage but he's only 9; at this age it is much easier to learn. (You don't have bills, women and such.....)
The thing about getting experience is....go work at the best places.....even if they don't pay good!!!
You will get priceless experience and good contacts!
It's like real estate, buy at the best neighborhood even if it's only a small place. It will appreciate much faster to a higher dollar amount! Same with experience!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, the forecast is the USA will be 44% Hispanic by 2040!!!!!!

Probably close to that here in Tx. Sure seems like it anyways.

52% here in L.A.
But where someone is from should not be the issue.
The issue should be that everyone speaks the same in the biz area.
English.
That way everyone is on the same page.
Except for Flor-e-da, and we know what happens to pages, cards ect. down there.

"By the way, the forecast is the USA will be 44% Hispanic by 2040!!!!!!" ..................I don't think this is true. When I was a kid they said the same thing, and that was ____, years ago.

Yeah, it'd be nice if everyone spoke the same language, but as long as restaurant profit margins require that back-of-the house staff make not much above minimum wage, a large portion of the available market (besides, of course, gullible culinary students) is going to be Spanish speakers. I've been very interested to learn how this group of guys I work with are able to function just fine in society, thank you, without knowing any English beyond "crab cake appetizer."

Corey, you mean to tell me that they don't do cartoons by hand?
I suppose next you'll say that there really wasn't a Batman.
Hear that?....thats the sound of what was left of my childhood memories crashing down.
I need a nap.

Listen, do you know who is the biggest financial contributor to the Haitian immigration lobby???
Yes, the NRA, no, not the gun kind either!
Yes, they have to keep that steady stream of dishwashers coming over!!!!!
As long as operators can get away with paying as little as possible to ANYONE in their operation, they will.
Look at yourselves, would you leave for another job for $100 more a weeek? $50, $25??? It all depends on the situation right?
It's the same with operators, they get what they can for as little as possible!
