I am too old school I guess, but what the Hell is VEGAN?

By Point83702 (Point83702) on Saturday, September 04, 2004 - 12:03 am: Edit

A mental disorder?(that's a joke you over sensitive tofu munchers)
vegan-no meat, no dairy, no eggs-strict vegetarian

lacto/ovo vegetarian-dairy and eggs o.k., but no meat
I don't know what you'd call all the people I know that call themselves "vegetarians", but eat seafood also

I dated a girl that was a vegan. Holy moly it was hard to find interesting meals to cook for her. I can understand the vegetarian thing, but no cream or butter. And then we come to CHEESE. How can you enjoy life without cheese. The other day I ran into a beautiful girl I hadn't seen in a while and asked her to come over for dinner. She said she wants me to teach her how to bake some good deserts. When discussing the meal I would prepare for her she informed me she was vegan. I figured I could pull something out of my bag of tricks to impress her. Then she told me she did not eat anything made with wheat flour either. I was thinking about baking something with amaranth or quinoa flour. Does anyone have any ideas or recipes for baking with any alternative flours.

Cv: Here is a great alternative, get a parrot. They just love sunflower seeds. And some fruit here and there. OK, LOL, I have an Amazon Red Lord Parrot, male, pain in the ass. If he doesn't get enough fresh sunflower seeds in one bowl, and some good fruit in the other (that he likes) he starts squawking like crazy. DOES ANYONE HAVE A GOOD RECIPE FOR ROASTED PARROT? Just kidding, almost, some times? OK, seriously, just hit google and you will get lots of stuff. ChefDanP.

Point: Great answer. I have been asked that question a few times and to tell you the truth I have gotten so many different answers I just tell anyone that one of my best friends is a supposed veggie but he eats anything that's not(Well I wanted to say KIA but for any veggies that might touch a sore spot)bleeding. (Now that does sound gross) He had his 50th birthday a while ago and I bought him a 50# bag of BIRD SEED. How about a bird seed souffle? Yukoruni. Beware of vegans if you are a chef. On the other hand, look at the good side. It only costs me about 50 cents a day to feed my parrot, and all he does is bitch. On the other hand my girlfriend, ooops, she might see this. But I think she might be related. LMAO. ChefDanP.

ChefDan, glad to see you came outta the closet(not saying anything like that). You're a funny fella. As for that parrot, I'd sticka spicket up his and rotate on low heat. Might need some sorta fat on there too. ;)

A vegan is somebody that will not eat anything with a face or product that came from anything with a face.
Ummm parrot... tastes like chicken.

they have rest's out here (Cal.) just for, and i don't even like saying the word....vegan.
yuk!
gotta go brush my teeth!!!!!
how can anyone in their right mind not eat cream, or butter.
puts water on my fire.
we should give them their own state to go live in, like Mexico.
lol!...just kidding, just kidding don't have a tissy, theres nothing wrong with mexico (that the 4th armor division could not solve.)
lol.

I found this on a site called veganoutreach.com: "saying "I'm vegan" is synonymous with saying, "I have decided to live a lifestyle that does not support animal exploitation."

CV-Was she a vegan and gluten intolerant? If so that would really suck. Maybe she is just a masocist or hedonophobic.

By Chefrev (Chefrev) on Saturday, September 04, 2004 - 04:47 pm: Edit

CV: WOW! Vegan AND wheat intolerant?!? Tell her to print out this website page and eat the paper, that's about all I could suggest with any flavor.

No seriously it's hard to eat that way, and if some one has to do so or has chosen it takes more creativity to come up with interesting dishes. My stepsister is vegetarian because she's has to for health reasons. She eats pretty well, just different from us carnivores.

The Moosewood series of cookbooks might be one place to look for recipes. The Moosewood is a vegetarian restaurant up in Ithaca, NY that's been around since the 60's. Good stuff, but I'm not sure how vegan they are.

By Chefmanny (Chefmanny) on Sunday, September 05, 2004 - 08:15 am: Edit

It's unhealthy to eat that way!!!!
Have you ever seen some of the vegans or even some vegetarians, they look like death warmed over!!!
It looks like they were prisoners from concentration camps!

Someone who eats seafood but no meat or poultry products is a pesco-vegetarian. I'm married to one, and it could be much worse. I'm not sure I could live with a vegan.

Someone who eats seafood but no meat or poultry products is totally shellfish....

I know a couple who are vegans and I must say I prefer my meat and potatoes any day. I actually went to their house for thanksgiving last year and was quite surprised at some of the dishes they created quite tasty and good. But thank goodness they were open to me bringing along some of my traditional favorites for our non vegan friends. I enjoyed some of their dishes but wouldnt endulge the lifestyle on a regular basis due to the limit of ingredients available and allowed for them to use! It actually is harder to cook vegan style!

CV - Throw her back. Go for a real woman who'll eat real food!!!!!

I used to cater to a vegetarian group and you wouldn't believe the gastrointestinal entertainment in that group LOL. I worked for them and cooked food the way they liked it, but what a pain!
