You all know that flattop went to Iraq.
Well, he's running sercuity for convoys AND cooking.
He's moved his family from Denver to Ft. Campbell and moved them into a house there.
So, heres the skinny........
He needs a laptop and can't afford one.
I guess theres no pc's set up where he is, and it would be nice for him to communicate with his family.
This is what I'm looking for.
Donations. I know it's been tough for some of you here lately,(biz wise) and I know some of you have families and bills and major stuff of your own.
If you would like to donate a couple of bucks towards this I figure we could knock this out in no time.
I don't want to get him some cheap piece of crap and someone told me there are good quality laptops for around $300. bills.
I'm going to do some checking and see what I can come up with. I'm also going to write a Chief friend of mine to see what if any the PX sells(do they still call it the PX?) In the meantime, if you want to send a couple of bucks heres my address.
Spike
815 N. Fuller Ave. # 8
Los Angeles, CA. 90046
I will collect the money, I will package it up and I will send it to him. As God as my witness, even in my death, this, I will accomplish. LOL!!
Please just checks and money orders. No paypall, I'm not friggin ebay.
And of course everyone who sends something, I will make sure he knows, who it is from.
Thanks.

and if you know of a place where I can walk into like target, best buy, ect. and get one, let me know.
maybe a place that has discounts for military personal.
I'm not looking to send for one, cause that will take more time to get to me and I figure I can drive it to a base and give it to the post people there to send.
thanks.

Spike, check E-Bay after you find out what's good. You can get some good deals, I will also check with my buddy who is an electrical engineer this weekend in Orlando, he gets all kinds of computers from jobs all the time and he might have something....so wait until after this weekend to buy anything.
It's XP by the way......

That Dell is a pretty good one. Try to find out what the best laptops out there are and check their prices. Then go one step down from those and look to buy one of those, not the best of the best. You can spend 1200+$$ on a good laptop. I don't know what you'll find for $300, but I dont' think it will be worth a flip. I'll search around as well and post back w/ anything I find.

I did all the work for this site and everything else I do on an old pIII laptop until that died a few months ago.

ANYTHING you can currently buy new is MORE than adequate for anyone but a heavy gamer or high end graphic designer.

My biggest concern would be for dependability, a good warrantee (not voided by being in a war zone) and small size.

Spike-

I could set up a Pay Pal donate button here in the site, on the left navigation frame. Heck I could put it on all the sites.

Let me know if you would like mt to.

HaHaHaHa!!!!...George, paypal button, thats funny.
Talked to Michael, he said that Dell ships and they include a case for the thing.
I'm going to call them tomorrow, and George, I will ask about that warranty and about the shipping.
I also talked to a friend and she said that for what hes looking to do with it, Dell is pretty good.
To end any confusion, I was not asking for people to split this with me.
If you can throw in, fine. If ya can't, no problem.
I planned on getting this no matter what and if anyone wanted to go in on it, great.
I don't have a house and those things...(kids)and big bills, just this damn dog!. So I'm sitting ok to do something like this, really.
So its a "Laptop for Flattop".... or LFF. LOL.
And the card will read from the Chefs at WFP.com

Well, heres an update.
You can't get crap for $300.
No matter.
I've settled on Windows XP, 256, Pen.3 or 4
brand name is still up in the air, has to have a case, because of the sand(weather)
This, with a DVD player, is around $625. from Dell's reconditioned div.
I'm waiting to find out from him if he needs it to be "wireless". If it does, then add $100. bucks.
Thats still pretty good from what I've learned about them. Did you know that some are a couple thousand??? What the hell do they do? Laundry?
Jesus.
I have to go to Best Buy and see what they have from their floor sample sales.
Thanks.

By Chefspike (Chefspike) on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 09:02 pm: Edit

never mind, found places to get one

By Chefspike (Chefspike) on Sunday, October 23, 2005 - 12:51 am: Edit

Hey George, you can take this down.
It's ordered, and gonna be sent.
Flattop will now be able to email home and get photos from home, and let someone who does not have one, use his.

Mission Accomplished.
