Is tipping a PC customary in the US?

I believe I just committed a faux pas but would like your opinions. I recently hired a personal chef and was pleased with the whole process. After she left I wondered whether I should have given her a monetary tip. Nothing I'd read or heard about PC's mentioned it so it didn't occur to me (until now). Her brochures and such also didn't say anything about it - not even to say something like "service not included".

Anyway, I certainly would pay a tip if it is customary but I don't want to start obligating myself to paying one if it's not. I'd appreciate any suggestions from PC's or PC customers. If one is appropriate then I could easily send a thank you card and a tip.

You wrote to me with this question and I am late in responding, so I will respond here.

As a working personal chef, I'd have to say that for a normal service, no, tipping isn't required. Now, if your personal chef does a dinner party for you or something out of the ordinary, a little bonus is always in good taste.

Mike: I am a PC in Greater Kansas City Area. I have Clients that tip because I do extra's for them. Or they are please with the service. It is a service industry, just as a restaurant, and tips are appreciated

Mike: I am also a PC in Kansas City area and I do find that some tip very well, others don't at all.
I think everyone in service industries experience this but always appreciate a tip. But I agree with Girlchef that it isn't really expected. Offering your recommedation to friends is a nice bonus too!
