Just got back from Dove hunting and thought I'd see if you all had any good recipes or ideas for cookin' the lil' buggers up!?!?
I usually just keep it simple and take the meat off the bone... stuff them w/ a jalapeno... and wrap with bacon (mainly for the fat). Plop em on the grill. Tasty.
But, I want to try something different, maybe a good glaze then grill em? I'm up for anything....

You can make a good quick glaze with jalapenos and apple jelly. Dice the peppers up and add them to the jelly and simmer on low for 35-40 minutes add salt and wp.

Cook them first, then glaze.

You weren't out shooting with GW were ya? ;<)

Doves????...those are flying rats!!!!!!

Manny: I have a huge spruce tree in my back yard. Every year for the last 11 years there have been the same 2 pairs of doves coming back to nest in my back yard in Chicago. They are wonderful birds. I never mind listening to them doing their coo-cooing when I am making breakfast in the morning and looking out the picture window in my kitchen. They see me and they know it's time for some goodies. I always leave some nice bread and sunflower seeds out for them. I think it is very nice to watch the little baby birds when they are finally able to hop from the nest onto my porch and scramble for themselves. I always leave good stuff out for them. In the same tree there is also a pair of cardinals that come back year after year. I love watching them also. They get along very well with the doves. I guess I am just a softee.

why would you want to eat dove anyhow?
its like a pigon,(sp) isen't it?
what do you shoot them with?
or is it the same with all game birds?

By Chefmanny (Chefmanny) on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 - 06:02 am: Edit

They look great, they sound great but they eat nothing but crap!!!...full of diseases!...wild ones anyway!

By Snuffaluff (Snuffaluff) on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 - 10:43 am: Edit

lmao.. you guys crack me up!! Full of disease? where'd you hear that Manny? I've been hunting and eating these delicious birds for about 11yrs now. disease...lol
Dove aren't quite as large as pigeon, and I don't know about eating pigeon as I only see them eating trash off the sidewalks, while Dove eat grain from a field.
George, thanks for the only useful information here... I guess I'll have to post on some other site to get serious answers. *rolls eyes*

I prefer Dove Bars myself,
I love the chocolate almond ones...

My mistake!!!!...I was thinking about pigeons!!!!!

By Ladycake (Ladycake) on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 01:54 pm: Edit

Yeah, Manny, the diseased ones are the "citified" ones. In the country the dove, pigeons, anad all are healthy, happy, and edible.

My dad hunts a lot and Mom puts the dove in milk overnight (out here they eat sage) then stuffs them with rice stuffing.

cut/paste... those the the shells I use. I shoot a 12ga. Remington 1100. It's not as easy as you'd think either.

I also like the little english bird called a tit.
cute little suckers, better than a budgie.
my favorite is the tit willow, same bird sung about in some songs over the years. I want a set of them, but you can't import them to america, hmm, looks like I'll have to find a pair of fake tits.

Snuff: Doves are nice little birds. If you need a 12 gauge to hit them you might as well throw a hand grenade at a rabbit. I used to shoot crows and ravens with a pellet rifle when I worked on a farm during 2 of my high school years. Filthy rotten birds. Pigeons suck. I wouldn't eat one if you paid me. Now, Quail, are nice tasty little buggers to grill with a little garlic butter.

Corey: I'm with you. Give me a Dove Bar anytime.

Spike: You crack me up. "Eat everything but the head and feet thingys." IE: Bobolinks. (BTW, Sp. is correct.)

By Chefspike (Chefspike) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 02:26 am: Edit

Hey Snuff, hear that. You Texans are going WAYYYYYYYY over board with the shotgun thing. Heres a guy used to hunt them with a pellet gun.
A PELLET GUN. THATS ONE LITTLE PELLET. LOL!!
I wouldn't eat any of those above mentioned birds.
ok. maybe Quail, and one of those tits (sp)
but pigon!....Yuck!
i'd rather eat one of those over sweet, greezy donuts. and thats not going to happen.

By Snuffaluff (Snuffaluff) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 03:34 pm: Edit

I doubt very seriously that you were shooting crows or any other bird out of the air w/ a pellet gun. If so, you should get money for showing off that kind of talent.
Corey, send me some tit wouldya!! Fake is fine. *8)

By Corey (Corey) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 05:59 pm: Edit

hmm, fake tits are like 25.00 each. and they only have one type of them. tit willows, I think.
good conversation starter thou, in a bar, you asking a girl back to your place to see "your" tits... hmm, I think I see some t-shirt ideas starting.

Snuff: When I was 15 & 16 I lived on a farm in Southern IL. during the summers. From my 2nd story bedroom I used to shoot the •••• out of crows and starlings. Starlings are filthy pieces of crap. I did mention in my previous message naming ravens. I meant starlings. Same crap though. I used to nail the suckers fairly accurately within a 100 yard range. AND, I did not say flying. Used to hit them in the trees. But I did hit several of the scumbags when they would fly out of the trees in a flock after I just nailed one of them from the branches up top. I learned to shoot at the top of the tree and then try to nail the others as they were flying up and away. Kind of a shotgun approach I guess. AND, I got paid for every one of the dirty little buggers I shot down. I also used to hunt Pheasant
with a 22 rifle. I don't like cleaning a crapload of shot out of a bird. AND, YES, I was a damn good shot. Came in handy when I was in Nam.

SUFFY !!!!
did you read that?
100 yards!
Man don't mess with people from Chicago.
come to think of it, my girlfriend is from Chicago.
she doesn't like birds either.
ya know, theres a lot of those birds, "fake tits" out here in LA. they get hunted all the time. I haven't heard about the "willow" ones.
what sizes do those birds come in?

Corey, please send me 6 of those t-shirts.
XL, black, with white letters
