I just found a potential kitchen to rent in the Long Island, NY area. However neither I nor the place knows how much I should be charged. This seems to be a very new concept in Long Island, since I called close to 50 places that I knew had kitchens and got turned down and the local national restaurant assoc. didn't have any information in regards to this. Can someone please give me an average rate....

Mill-women, This is for LA.
It's a kitchen in a church, and they charge 800.00 per month. For that you have use of the following.
2-ovens, 1 under a flat top
1 under four burners
reach-in freezer
reach in cooler
floor hobart
45 ft. of table
pot/dish washing station
a small ice cream freezer
a stageing area
parking
oh and some 6 ft. of shelf for dry goods.
Theres 4-5 other cat's. on any given weekend working in this same space at once.
If it's just you, and if it has the sim. equip.
see if he'll take 500. no matter if you have 1 job or 12 per month. That seems fare. I would guess they are paying all utilites?

Spike just hit the nail on the head here. It really depends on what space and equipment is provided.

The market in LA is similar in price to here on LI so I think Spikes info is a valuable bench mark.

Please keep in mind that, I don't or I'm not a caterer. But I don't think that renting on a pay per day basis is a good investment for you.
It would end up costing you more money, and from what I've read in some of these posts, you guys work on a slim profit margin already. See if you could also sub-lease to others. Maybe find someone who just does wedding cakes, or one that has a desert biz. It would increase what you have to offer and you could swing a deal with them and buy, get cheaper products. Just a thought.

I disagree with the previous posting. Renting a kitchen "per diem" or sharing is a great way to get started without adding a lot of fixed costs to your business. Until you are ready to jump into your own situation, it can be a great way to go. I also disagree with the pricing the other postings mention. Those are way too low. In NYC the going rate is a minimum of $150 per day or around $1500 mo. Many places charge as much as $3500 per month for a share. You get use of a couple of work tables, a rack in the walk in or your own fridge plus use of all of the ovens, stoves, utensils, etc. YOu bring in all of your food, condiments, ingredients. Of course, this can be a pain, shlepping all of your things each time but you may be able to rent a couple of shelves (around $300 month) so you can keep all of your stuff around and come and go. I have a location in Manhattan if you are interested in doing anything here. I will be happy to give you more info. This is the way I got started and I really think it is a great way to go especially if you don't have jobs every day.

I want to say thanks for the responses to my question. Since the place I'm renting is a VFW they (and myself) feel good with a $25-$30 per day costs. The only down is I would have to transport my stuff back and forth but they are open to ideas on how to improve the kitchen and right now I have Pantry that I keep all my dry ingredients a couple of storage bins for pots and pans etc.

Marcey I have heard of the city being high but I would of never thought it would be that high. Where I'm at (Suffolk County) you can rent your own commerical space for around $1000 per month...
