I have been asked by a local group to give a speech to their members. I am looking for input from caterers. Take a look

Hello Mark-
I spoke with you briefly last week regarding catering training for the Day Labor Program. We have scheduled a series of four classes to better prepare our workers to serve the personnel needs of catering companies. The first three classes will cover food preparation and serving. We are hoping that you could volunteer an hour for our final session to cover industry expectations and protocol. The Women's Collective generally meets from 6-7pm on Wednesdays. We will have a translator present, and possibly a representative from another company as well. Would either October 9, 16, or 23 be convenient for you? Why would they need a translator? To try to convey what work is maybe???? This sounds like a bunch of bored wives at home that their husbands are trying to get out of the house so they can get a little action from the maid or nanny!!!!!!!

Excuse me, Manny, but some of the best laborers, day or otherwise, that I have had work for me have been, in your words "third world", y es posible ellos no hablen ingles. I believe that others, who are hampered by language or intellect (I have also hired mildly retarded persons to wash dishes who did excellent work) but are willing and able to do a decent days work for a decent wage should not be prevented from doing so by the prejudices of closed minded individuals.

It might also come to your attention that some people live legally in this country for all of their lives and never learn to speak English... hence the translater (actually an interpreter I hope, as a translater works from the written word). This is true for generations of people living in enclaves of immigrants not only from Spanish speaking countries but also from countries speaking Chinese, German, Polish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Italian, Greek, etc.

Please do not assume that because you have had one experience, that is the only experience possible! There really are good people out there, willing to really work for a decent wage, not looking for a hand out. Give people the benefit of the doubt. I guess that's my rant for the week...

Cherie, I live in MIAMI, yo tambien hablo espanol, creole, and several others. I did not make any disparaging remarks other the the truth. I said that those workers come from a third world country, which they do and, they are exploited here, which they are!!!!! I re-read my post and suggest you do to!
I have had more then one experience, as a matter of fact my experience is that the AMERICANS are the minority in most places I have worked, and lived!!!!
My father is Spanish and my mother Italian in case you were wondering! I was born and raised in Miami.

this point is made why?
canada, some places you must speak french.
mexico, can't really know what your getting if you don't speak the lanuage.
same with France, Italy, ect,ect.
they expect anyone who comes to THEIR country to speak the same language, should be the same here.
this is an old argument. it ends the same way, because of all the libs and do gooders here, many don't even try to learn english.
here in LA. there are SO MANY PEOPLE that can't even understand the money!
they found people who were issued drivers lic.'s that didn't understand ONE WORD OF ENGLISH.
thats screwed up! all that money going to print stuff that we all pay for, cause of lazy people.
thank God that they passed the english only in schools. enough already! come here want to work, want what America has to offer, learn to speak the language, so when I'm screaming at you to move your damn car out of the fast lane, cause your doing 30 mph, you will understand completey what I'm saying.

I have no sympathy for foreigners man, like I said I live in Miami and we have South Americans fly in here everyday and go to Jackson Memorial (public hospital) hospital and get organ transplants, emergency surgeries of any and all kinds and by the day they can walk they get on the plane and haul ass back to where they came from and leave "US" "THE AMERICAN TAX PAYERS" with the freakin' tab!!!!!! I know this, my wife and sister in law work in the medical field and they see this everyday!
Not only that but, they come into the country, get pregnant by a "GRINGO" and wow! we have a little "gringo" so the whole family can now stay here in the USA, collect child support from the "IDIOT GRINGO" who gets dumped as soon as the pregnancy test is positive and, they get on the welfare roll to boot!
No this is not a theory, I see it here in lovely S, FL. everyday guys!!!!!
Like I said, my parents were the first generation of my family in the USA but, that generation worked their asses off to get to where they got!
Today, they scheme and scam just like the terorist who sneak in this country under the guise of "STUDENTS"......you know what I see nothing wrong with racial profiling! IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We can suffer a little to enjoy our "peace and tranquility"

If you are from a multiethnic family then I am sure you know that families from all over the world know how to work and are not restricted by language. That was how your message read to me. Again I am sorry if I misread it.

Here, in California, we have a lot of Mexican workers, many of them very hard workers, some of them not. Some of them come to make a living and send the money to their families in Mexico. Some come to suck off the common tit. There are also WASPs who work and some who don't. I was raised in a white town (KLAN oriented) and have fought this fight my whole life. Color and language don't matter, people are people and you will find both kinds in all groups. Lo siento, senor!

Spike - I made that point because it seemed to me that Manny was disparaging those folks because they didn't speak English. The implication being that if they didn't speak English they wouldn't know what work was. Apparently I was mistaken. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

Manny - FYI> I am French, German, Scottish, English, African, American Indian, etc. (Very white bread, ifyaknowhadimean) LOL

My great aunt in Westminster could not even read the street signs in her neighborhood of 60 years because they are now written in Hmong or Laotian or something! How's that for the good ol' US of A? She died a few years ago, but it got so that she couldn't go out in her front yard or anything because of her fear of violence. She was in her 90's and didn't want to give up the house where she had raised her family. Too sad! They lived just a few blocks off of Beach Boulevard where my uncle had the Westminster Bike Shop for 40 years. Great memories there, but now it's little Vietnam.

Hey, someone has to build houses in a day or three. here in Texas, we have the same problem that you guys have. I was in the bank the other day, and this guy is in there having someone translate for him so he could open an account. I thought, "why doesn't he speak english"?
Spike is right when he says that we are expected(for the most part) to speak another countries language if we are there. Ecspecially if we lived there! How else do you expect to survive? Oh, i know. let's all move to Italy and make our own lil' city w/in a city, that way we can all speak english. ChinaTown ring a bell? Here in Tx, we have lil' Mexico. It's absolutly pathetic to me!
