I just came across the question concerning where german chocolate cake originated. I have a recipe in a cookbook at home that I think is called The Texas Home Cookbook. Anyway, there is a lot of history writeups in it with the recipes and the writers indicated that the chocolate making company called "German's" had put out a chocolate cake recipe w/ the pecan coconut frosting and then "Baker's" company acquired "German's" and when the recipe was put out again on their boxes of chocolate they retained the name Germans which people then interpreted as "Baker's German Chocolate Cake" which in reality it was the companys name not a type of cake and is really "Baker's German's Chocolate Cake". This is how we came to call this type of cake a German Chocolate Cake. I'll write back with the exact title & author's name of the cookbook that I got this information out of.
