: I remember eating date bars as a child which had a kind of crumb layer on the bottom, the date mixture as second layer, and crumb mixture on top. Might have had oatmeal in it. I have searched all my cookbooks and every date recipe I have mixes all ingredients together before baking. Would like to include this in my Christmas baking this year. Anyone help?

I don't know of any recipe databases on the internet to match the one on Compuserve, COOKS, they have literally every home recipe you can imagine. Everything I have is in large batches sorry.
Just to help you along , typically the base is firmer than the top with the addition of egg, helps keep it together when cut, the filling (if commercial) is date spread from a bucket.
The topping is same as the bottom minus egg , add a touch of salt
and add extra flour to make crumbly. We make somnething similar called apricot oatmeal square, use apricot filling.
The topping is rolled oat, brown sugar and butter with a pinch of salt ( the salt is necessary to balance oats or it tastes tinny).
I don't think this formula would work with dates, dates have no color, the flavor is a tad subtle...too subdued.
Why not try taking a similar square recipe and use dates for the filling.
