:What you are experiencing is the result of the poor job that is done in educating children. I am an instructor in a community college and I am faced with students that do not have basic math skills. a large number of students do not know how many ounces are in a pound or ounces in a cup. There is no excuse for this. Not at this level.

What has happened is that children are now passed from grade to grade without any concern as to whether or not they have mastered the skills of that particular grade. In addition, I think that the education systems does not set high enough standards.

This will continue until educators are willing to make a stand and require students master basic skills before moving on.
