IT companies such as MICROS have had IT in the kitchen for quite a while, but as you mention, it does make some people uncomfortable as it is percieved as a big step.

Without making a sales pitch for MICROS the technologies that are available are:
KDS: Kitchen Display systems that takes the places of kitchen printers to that food items are logical created and timed. Traditional once a ticket was printed in the kitchen, the info disappeared. Now every food item is tracked throughout it's life cycle.

The whole inventory process from ordering to maintaining can now by handled electronically. Using receipes, inventory can be monitored real time and alerts can be set based on par levels. It can even print, fax or e-mail PO's to automate requests for inventory.
