There are easier, less expensive ways of getting started. One: Buy the book "Food Styling & Photography" by John Carafoli. It gives great tips on just about everything. Two: Call a few photographers in your area and find out who is photographing food. Call them and ask if they would be willing to test with you (explain your background and what you are trying to do). Three: Call food stylists in your area and offer to assist on shoots. (You'll have better luck if you offer your services for free.) Good Luck and write with questions or call Jim @ (414) 479-0846 (Milwaukee)
