: hello. I am currently attending a community college in the pastry dept. this is my first semester, and I plan to graduate in dec. and then to take a year in the culinary dept. my question is: is it reasonable to assume that a community college education is just as useful and beneficial as an art school or perhaps the C.I.A. ? I want to get a job now in the industry, perhaps in a bakery(this is what interests me most), but i'm uncertain that anyone will hire someone with little skills and not enough experience--i have none. thanks.

Hi, its not a question of whether community college is as usefull as the CIA, the fact is its as useless but on the bright side its a lot cheaper.
If you went through a 4 yr program you'd be out nearly $80K and you'd STILL have no experience and no skill.
Bakeries and pastry shops are cryin out for people like you, I can tell you there are people right here who run excellent bread bakeries who have told me of their incredible frustration at not being able to find serious apprentices.
Read my post to Amy in Bakers dozen.
Start at the best place, the beginning.
