As far as I know, there are 2 definitions of being a chef. Number 1 is a person in charge of an entire kitchen or department. It's really quite vague. But the second definition is a bit clearer. Based on industry standards, one should have worked a minimum of 2,000 hours to be certified as a COOK. Another 4,000 hours would qualify you as a CHEF.

I don't really know how reliable these definitions are because one could have worked a gazillion hours in a professional kitchen and still act stupid about his job. I guess I'm just confusing you all the more, huh?
