sugar work and competitions

What about sugar work? How important is sugar work is to a chef today?It is so BIG in the US now, but is it really any use besides competitions. And, on that topic, what does competition work bring to a young pastry chef today? Does anybody out there get paid extra to do sugar work or competitions in a hotel or pastry shop?
