: I have just started a home-based catering business, only to find out it is illegal in Burbank, CA. I need to rent a commercial approved kitchen in Burbank or either Los Angeles or Hollywood. By the way, does anyone have suggestions on where I should file for my permits and licences? Helpppppppp

Ouch!! that is tough! How is it that you started a business BEFORE finding out the legalities?

Not only is it illegal in Burbank, but California and the rest of the US as well.

How much money did you invest in your home kitchen? Did you put in commercial equipment? Did you rennovate your garage?

We find that most home based caterers just start out by doing it. Selling to friends then picking up a few accounts. YOu are not alone. Most home based caterers do not know that what they are doing is illegal. At least you found out before the sales tax people padlocked your house and attached your bank account. IF you think the health dept is tough, you should see what the dept of revenue for your state is like. They are ruthlesss!

Before you go any further, contact your local health dept. They will be able to give you the whole answer regarding permits. Contact your city business license dept for information on licenses. Most importantly contact a business attorney for advice on any future business endeavors.

Hope this helps.

Carl
