Deciding to enter the culinary field as a full time career is one huge decision. I could go on lecturing about the ups and downs of the industry and why you should or shouldn't go into it, but let me just say it in a few words:
I'm currently going to culinary school, and what most of my chef instructors say is that one thing about their chosen profession is that YOU NEVER ENTER IT FOR THE MONEY. You should have a true passion for food to become successful in the field. If you chase the money, you'll never get it. But if you chase the basic pleasure of doing what you're doing, the money will come later.
More than education, you need the experience especially for this kind of career. Going to culinary school doesn't guarantee you a higher rank in the kitchen. Far too many students have graduated culinary school without being able to do a simple sauce.
There are several fields in the food industry that you can get into without having to hit the kitchen day in and day out. As a journalist, maybe you could consider becoming a food journalist for a change.......
