I WOULD LIKE TO START A SMALL BUSINESS OUT OF MY HOME. WE ARE RELOCATING TO A CITY OF ABOUT 30 THOUSAND PLUS A UNIVERSITY.I WOULD LIKE TO BAKE 5 DIFFERENT CAKE AND 3 DIFFERENT COOKIE RECIPES. I FEEL IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR STUDENTS, TAILGATES AND ETC. ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET STARTED.THANKS!

First I would call the local dept of health. They will tell you if it is even possible to legally do this out of your home in that area. I have to have a food, and milk license, as well as pass inspections in my county.

After you do that, start giving away samples and business cards.

Many caterers (if not most) start in their homes legal or not. When I first started I wasn't sure how it was going to go over (11 years later I'm still working out of my home). I cater business functions, cocktail parties, the occasional wedding reception etc. I stay as busy as I want to be. Check out the realtors in your area, they are a good source. Business luncheons are a good place to start too.

Just make sure you have insurance as your homeowner's will not cover you. I have a separate caterer's insurance policy.
