Kitchen shoes

After destroying my latest pair of doc martens i think it is time to find some new shoes any one got any good ideas( no clogs) I think i have destroyed a pair of just about everything but if anyone has any good ideas i'd love to hear them

Destroyed after how long? 3 mos? 6 mos? 1 yr? I don't expect my shoes to last more than 6 mos. Then, if they do, it's a bonus. I just look for the least expensive shoe that gives me the support I need. My last pair was $13.99 at Payless and lasted almost a year. This time I spent $40 on a pair with better ventilation, but it's only been a month.

Does anyone remember the name of the thread where this was discussed recently????

I have been wearing Doc Martins shoes (not the boots)since way before they were fashionable, (the late 60's) all I do is put in a good quality insole every 3 months and use a leather punch to put a single 1/8 inch hole with a grommit in each instep. My shoes last an average of four years per pair. But I always buy 2 pairs and change them out daily when I work in the kitchen.

And a trick I learnt in the army was this to break in leather shoes or boots when they are real stiff when new. Put on a pair of old socks and smear them with a lot of saddle soap and put the new shoes on and wear them for at least 24 hours.Then throw away the socks, it softens the shoes and moulds them to your feet perfectly and as a side effect really softens the calouses on your feet too.

I can't remember the last thread but I remember it as being fashion bias. I'm the old fart wearing commercial rockports.
Johnnyboy, find a surgeon or cop and they will tell you what to wear. Dpconsu gives you the best advice.Have two pair and change them out frequently.

I remember when doc martens were made properly and lasted for years but like food with mass production you get s**t and unfortunatley we have pretty strict guidlines for shoes here?!!!! I work too much to be running out to buy shoes every 3 months i am looking for something more indestructible

I wear Wolverines. I average a 12 hour day and they last about 1 1/2 years. Thick shock absorbent soles and steel toe. Drawback --- about $120 bucks. I think they are worth it(after trying on countless of brands)....

since we are talking about kitchen here...anyone visited soapman.com? offers great prices for line items like floor cleaners and other soaps and detergents. the trick is that you've to register with them first and then you get the discount codes in your email which you can use...i purchased some floor cleaners (citra-solid) from there..much better than what i used to get from ecolab and mucccch cheaper :) check out chefs...you may like it...oh by the way, i use wolverines for my 8 hour shift and they work great...since last 2 years.

hane you tried shoes for crews?
www.shoesforcrews.com they make excellent nonslip kitchen shoes and they only cost about $40 bucks a pair.
I have been wearing them for the past 5 years and usually get about a year of 16/hr days per pair before they finally come unglued. i still haven't been able to wear out the soles on a pair.
the other nice thing is they come w/ a 60 day wear guarentee ( you get to try them for 60 days if you don't like them then return for refund)
they also helped my ankle and leg pain that I used to get from long hours in the kitchen.

Used to be a Doc's fan....one pair got me through culinary school, another pair through a year of work. Both pairs split the sole right across the ball of the foot within a year. I found Sears Die-Hard shoes to be excellent. They are nice sturdy leather "cop" shoes, usually on a shelf unbder "Service Shoes". Available with steel toe or without, they run about $80 and last years. Truly slip resistant soles that you could walk through a vat of clarified butter in. Latley I have absolutely fallen in love with Birkenstock Londons... fully enclosed foot, with a single buckle across the instep..one pair has lasted me two years, but they arent cheap at about $150 for the non-skids...

Have I got a deal for you! Wal mart has a fairly new shoe on the market,they are called tread safe and are made for our bussiness,leather uppers,double stiched,side vents,availible in mens and womens styles,high top,low top,or oxford styles,arch support,good cushin, I have not been able to make them slip yet on soap,oil,grease.they last well mine are going strong after a year,and best of all my feet don't hurt after a 14/16 hour day. I wish the rest of me faired as well. They cost between 25 & 30 dollors a pair and if for some reason they mess up in 6 months Wally World will give you a new pair(save the recept)

Hey there guys..
The best all around shoe in the kitchen has got to be army boots.. I am going on 4 years with mine and they are still going strong.. They look really good too. you cant go wrong with them.. there steel toe..they are nice and shiney.. and the soles are non slip!!! you can get them at a surplus store or about 100.00 can.

I had two pair of Doc Martens split across the sole just like Seabass. Even though I've always been a no-clog guy, I got a pair of the Birkenstock professional clogs and I'm sold. And when they get dirty, I can just wipe them down or throw them in the dishwasher.

Shoes for crews may be the "low end of the market" but I have never had any other work shoe sole that has outlasted them. Here's the list of what I have tried: Doc Martens, Red Wings, Wolverine, Sears Die Hard, Shoes for Crews, Birkenstock, Rockport and more cheapy Wal-Mart style shoes than I care to mention. I would recommend Birkenstock Professional clogs but since you don't wear clogs I'll just tell you that my first pair lasted 1 and a half years before they split. I am in no way shape or form a small man and tend to put shoes through the wringer fairly quickly. But between Shoes for Crews and Birkenstock I get well over a year out of a pair of shoes without switching between pairs.

I've had my Red Bobin's going on two years now and they are in excellent shape.
They say you should not wear shoes until they break, because they loose their supportability after they are worn for a certain time and your feet suffer. They should be replaced on a more frequent basis, beign the cheapskate I am I wear them until they fall off my feet but the Red Robin's are great.
I used to wear a shoe Bragard sells but it only comes in blue and beige!; and they stopped making the high top; or they stopped carrying it!
I used Shoes For Crews but found them to have little support!

I had worn a pair of Rockport "Rocky" shoes that were white and resembled nurse's shoes. The hotel that I had worked at sold them. They were comfortable, but the sole split after one year's usage. I cannot complain about them, other than white shoes which resembled nurse's shoes are not exactly my style. I simply don't wear oxford-style shoes anymore. I strictly buy steel-toed, slip-resistant workboots for working in the kitchen, due the hazardous environment of commercial kitchens. My only pet peeve with clog shod cooks is that they seem to find kicking their clogs at each other across the kitchen to be quite amusing. I'm reminded of Anthony Bourdain's voice on the opening of his "Cook's Tour" television program, "Shouldn't you be doing something? Make the @#$%&*! dessert!" :-)

Fantasy sports kind of put you in the GM seat of a team in the sport of your choice. You draft team of players from all the NHL teams and get points based on how they perform in real life. The trick is to tweak your lineup by (Caviar)trading, or add/drop or just starting different players from your reserve(sautee) each week to try and outfox the other guys.

Back when I first started getting into hockey my friends and I didn't know of anywhere around here to play on ice so we started playing roller hockey. I am far (smoked salmon)too old and fat to play hockey now, but I must say it was definitely the most fun I have ever had playing any sport/

well, ofcourse I'm sad to see them go, especially Hatch with his 1-2nd highest +/- . And to see him join the redwings w/ the other 1-2nd highest +\- makes me sick! lol

But, we didn't offer him what he wanted, so that's that. Now that it's over and done w/, I'll let it go and hope he gets hurt just like any other redwing. :D I think we still have a great chance at it this season. Only time will tell, but I don't think that loosing those two will affect us that much. We have plenty of depth up front to make up for it. I hope.

I hope the hell not. It wasn't his fault that the cubs choked the last three games. They sucked period. I'm please that they made it to the playoffs honestly but I really never expected them to get there. I'm happy but flustrated right now. They played that last game like the Cubs of old. The thing is, once you've been screwed like Huizenga did in '97 you are hesitant to devote your loyalty to any sport. I know they won't get the stadium!
The way I look at it, if the players really want a new stadium, (for any sport), they should play for minimal salary for 2-3 years and own part of the profits from the stadiums in the future!
Why should the public have to pay for the venues, then pay exorbitant prices for tickets, food, and souveniers???
I am really anti-public funding of any venue for the benefit of one or two multi millionaire owners.

Cheers Manny, I couldn't agree w/ ya more! It's like insurance. You pay and pay for it, but you never get anything back if ya don't use it. Jerry Jones, when he bought the cowboys, bought the stadium and everything for something like 400,000,000(million). Now look at the worth of da boys... overwhelming. I don't feel that a sports player should make more than 500,000/yr. I mean, they get to play a sport that they love to play and make millions while our police,firefighters, teachers, etc make squat. It's pathetic.

On the other hand, new staduims are great for guys like us. I cook at the new Soldier Field in Chicago and it is NICE -- new Vulcan everything (except for the induction burners -- don't know what brand those are), real high-end gourmet food, and 70 of us to cook it. These people spare no expense because the folks we're cooking for will pay the $$$

Great in what sense? The majority of the people (taxpayers)who pay for these mega-venues that are in essence a cash cow for the "owners" only, don't ever use the facility!

The sad thing is, Spike, is that some of the Canadian teams are in pretty dire financial straits. Edmonton, Ottowa, these aren't huge markets. While they have a loyal home fan base it is not a huge home fan base. As the players demand more salaries and better facilities they are actually helping put the nails in their teams coffins. Remember the deal with the Canadiens? Montreal is a large market but if not for an American (whose name escapes me)and Celine Dion, who, if you have ever been to Montreal, is made out to be some sort of friggin' saint, one of the original 6 would be gone. How sad would that have been? Franchises can relocate and players will still get paid, but it ceases to be about the fans. Plus who knows what will happen when the collective bargaining agreement runs out.

There seriously needs to be a salary cap in hockey. Let's level the ice so to speak, make it harder for teams like the Avs, the Stars and (sorry) the Wings to buy a Stanley Cup. Then you have the Rangers who can't even buy a cup.

I have a solution but, the agents won't go for it.
I believe in performance pay, they get a base salary, minimal for showing up to play, bench warmers would get a little more because they don't get too much playing time. When a player made a catch, scored a goal, made a basket, whatever, ALL actions would have a dollar value assigned to them, if they mess up, like drop the ball, not catch it, that would also have a dollar value which would be DEDUCTED from the final pay.
Now, the pay would only be able to be 60% of the take at the gate at each game, I think 40% is enough for the owner to cover his expenses and profit. No owner should lose money and players would not get paid more then what they deserve for the day!
This would encourage the players and owners to be a little nicer to the fans by REALLY wantig them to show up for EVERY game!
What do you all think about that idea?????????

Ricky Williams... running back for the Dolphins. That's the way he set out his contract(at least w/ the saints). He got bonuses for yardage, TDs, etc. His base salary was waaay low compared to everyone else, I think something like 250,000?

It's a great idea, and it should be mandatory. Every player in every sport plays because they love the game, not for the money. I'm talkin in their hearts. Just like we love to cook, we obviously don't make tons of cash.

If it was based on profit margin then I think there would be a bunch of restaurants that all of the sudden "run out" of beef or lamb but have plenty of chicken and pasta. Then the morons would be upset because of the lack of high ticket items.......Or if the commision was based on menu price then the chef would be screaming everytime a server sold a salad as entree. The problem is with the players union and the owners. There needs to be a salary cap. Who is footing the bill for the higher salaries and the new arenas? The fans, that's who. Second level seats in most markets average 50 to 60 bucks. That is what is killing the game. Now, I don't know about the Canadian gov giving teams $$ but as far as Americans footing the bill, no one twisted that guys arm to invest in the Canadiens. It would have been sad to see such a part of hockey history go teats up, that and it probably gives the guy a huge tax shelter.......

I have to find out how many games are on the tv up there each year, for free.
as compared to the U.S.
as far as what they charge, thats all what some dummies are willing to pay.
just like the food biz.
there are people that pay stupid prices for snob food and dishes that I could make.

Not like the food biz at all: If Average Joe doesn't want to pay 75 bucks a plate he can go to Denny's and pay 6. Hell even the cheap seats at an NHL game are 30 to 40 bucks. Have I gouged customers on prices? Sure. But then again, My place wasn't the only plate in town. It is hard to compare the only NHL franchise in a town to the thousands of restaurants in the same town. Not exactly the same ratio of choices is it? Consider, Spike that you and I are probably getting paid a fair wage for doing what we do, then there's Jaromir Jagr who gets 11 million a year to suck and whine about it......

That's why FL. fans know what to do, they don't go to the Marlin games and they give them away, you can get outfield seats for $2.00 then move to the $125.00 seats, they're empty anyway!
At the Panther games, they moved to a new arena, I had season tixs, they moved me to the nose bleed section for $30 a seat, most season tix holders did not come back to the new arena. Tickets were $5.00 for the cheap seats during game day!!!!!!

Listen to all the bitchin about the NHL, if any of you love the game of hockey go watch An AHL or any other minor league or college team. For 8 to 10 dollars US you can watch players playing their hearts out trying to make the big leagues. Parking is cheap, so are the concessions

here in simi, ca. there is a ice arena, so I do get to see some small college and other games that are very nice to see.

My apologies, you obviously have a love for the game. Don't let those kids beat up on you, just remember the old bull and the young bull story. I wish I could still play but the one thing Bobby Orr and I have in common, no knees left. I played for Boston University in the 60's and part of a season for the Saginaw Gears in the IHL until I got drafted by uncle sam, killed my knees in the process. Should have hit the books instead of the boards.

I play with a couple of sticks from the IHL Viper's(?)
Straight sticks, I love em, big heavy hunks of wood. The kids laugh at me cause of the staight blade, then wonder how I can lift the puck up near the face. Love doing that. It shuts them up.
I never followed semi all that close, but the asst. coach I had loved it when he was in Mich.
