I'll have to look it up to be sure and I'm not near any of my sources at the moment, but I do believe there is caffeine in cocoa. I believe that most of the caffeine in chocolate resides in the chocolate liquor which is why white chocolate is caffeine free - in white chocolate, the liquor is extracted. I will look it up to be sure and get back to you.

According to a very old article I read, chocolate has about 6 milligrams per oz. of caffiene. A cup of coffee has around 100 per cup. Chocolate also has a compound called theobromine, which is also a stimulator.

Another suggestion is that craving for chocolate is related to psychoactive ingredients. Chocolate does contain theobromine but this is a relatively weak central nervous system stimulant which does not have strong subjective effects. Chocolate also contains caffeine but compared with tea and coffee it is an insignificant dietary source.

I checked my sources and yes cocoa does have caffeine. It doesn't have as much as block chocolate though. Cocoa is actually chocolate liquor that has been pressed to form a dust. Block chocolate is basically chocolate liquor with cocoa butter added. However, I don't know the relationship to coffee or tea, unfortunately. I can tell you though that the only caffeine that I put into my body is from chocolate occasionally and it's never enough for me to feel any affects.

Coffee has the most caffeine, followed by tea and then cocoa.
