I've tasted so many decorated cakes over the years. Just in search of a good cake recipe/frosting for decorated cakes. I dislike the frosting that taste like Crisco. In your opinion what makes a great tasting cake -- is it brushing the cake layers with some type of liquid before frosting or filling with a fruit filling. Is buttercream the best frosting to hold up on a cake and does the cake have to be refrigerated after frosting/decorating. The grocery store variety do nothing for most people -- just looking for the cake that will make them come back.

We all are looking for the perfect cake to keep everyone coming back. Unforunately we all don't have the same tastes so there isn't one answer. You end up making what pleases your taste buds and hope your customers like it too. You can do tastings with family and friends to validate your opinions or sell several options and see what sells. Go to the top selling bakeries in your area and find out what sells in YOUR area because tastes do vary in different regions.
Don't forget somewhere in your "figuring it out" price comes into play. The best tasting baked goods aren't always the cheapest to produce. Some people will pay for quality and some buy more based on price then taste.
So the answer is, your question can't really be answered.

Use real ingredients, real vanilla, quality chocolate, fresh berries, hormone free unsalted butter, organic unbleached flour, free range eggs. The better your ingredients are, the better your cake.
