Can anyone tell me about plastilina? I'd like to make some items out of poured sugar and I can't find all the info. I need even in the pro books. They just mention using metal strips (next paragraph) or plastilina to contain your liquid sugar. Well I understand what it does, but I don't know where to buy it or if there's a "dough" I could make to do the same thing?

My second question is similar...does anyone know where I could buy metal strips like what they make cookie cutters out of? My husband tells me I could find something like that in the roofing section of the hardware store. But he says it's not going to be easy to handle because it's a thicker gauge than I want. Getting my shape is one thing but making it perfectly flat so the sugar doesn't run under it would be a challenge.

Any help or advice?

I can't believe there isn't anyone here who can help me? Is plastina just clay you can buy at the craft store?

I have a page from one of Martha's magazines that shows how to make cookie cutters but it doesn't say where I can buy the metal....Help??????ANYONE!
I've always made them out of cardboard and then had to hand cut each one....not very quickly.

plastina?? not sure what you are talking about. but to me it sounds like you want to cast sugar. I have seen it done with rubber like material, where the image is traced on to the mat then cut out. then sugar is poured into the cut out area or chocolate is poured.
making your own cookie cutters. I have thought of that. sounds easy as long as you have access to the right equiptment. Im sure you can find the material at any do it your self hardware stores. you might want to try using tin or alumnin. the hardware store Im sure would be able to cut it to your specs. another good Idea I have had draw the Image you want on a peice of wood about 2 inches thickthen as long as you have the equiptment cut theis image out with a jig saw then you can mold and bend your peice of metal around the wood cut image. hope this has helped. good luck danno

Yes, cast sugar/poured sugar isn't that the same?I believe that's how they made cookie cutters in the old days (formed around wood). Are you saying I could have them cut the right gauge metal into strips? Wouldn't I have to worry about really sharp edges?

I have seen a photo of the rubber mat techique but it didn't give me enough details either...like what is it called and where would I look to buy it? Plastina it the name I got out of Bo Fribergs book (it's also shown in Micheal Rouxs' and Thuries' books).

I swear this is the year for taking a class in pulled sugar...I kind of wanted to play with the whole subject before taking classes to get my basics down.

I still don't own a professional sugar book, I really have to buy one! What's do you think is the definitive book written in English on sugar work???????
