I spent the holidays visiting my grandkids in the southwest and we went to eat at a popular steakhouse near Mormon Lake, Arizona. They keep sawdust sprinkled on the floor and deliberately "country" up the environment to make it rustic. Pristine it wasn't. Yet I found it appealing anyway and the food was well cooked and far, far better than I expected. Then last week, my mother and I visited a local establishment in Massachusetts. The name I will omit to spare embarrassment. This was a place run by an owner who is a frequent contributor to this forum. I was appalled at the dinginess of the front area's displays, the windows, counterglass, and the floor. I did order some baked items on the assumption (hope) that they had been baked at a temperature hot enough to make them safe to eat. If ever someone needed to spend less time on the "net and more time applying a little elbow grease, this is the case. Maybe I will offer as a slim excuse, that it might have been the crunch for time by the holidays that was to blame for lack of cleaning time, but it did look like an accumulation of grime. Needless, to say, a return visit will not be anytime soon.
