According to Friberg's The Professional Pastry Chef
These numbers vary according to what is being served at the reception
whether cake & champagne only, buffet dinner, or hor d'oeuvres.

* 18-inch=40-50 guests
* 16-inch=30-40 guests
* 14-inch=25-30 guests
* 12-inch=15-20 guests
* 10-inch=10-15 guests
* 8-inch=8-10 guests
Friberg notes that you should not count the top tier as it is
probably saved.
