First the rice (three choices, with slightly different grain
and cooking characteristics)Arborio, Carnaroli, Baldo. If
you don't know of a store which has these products, you're
probably not ready to start cooking something as complex as
risotto, because "...its all about the ingredients baby!"

Second, the stock. Make your own. Consult Julia or Madeleine.
If you don't know Julia or Madeleine, go to a fast food joint
and repent.

Third, wine. Don't use crappy cooking wine. If you don't
know where to find good wine, go to a bad neighborhood and
ask the guy standing outside the liquor store what he's
drinking.

Fourth, read several books (Hazan, Bertolli, Bugialli). If
you don't know who these people are, than go directly to jail,
do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars.

Fifth, find someone more gracious than me to teach your sorry
self. Cheryl, you must pay your dues before you can sing the
blues.
