Never heard of a checkered pie, but thats not to say one doesn't exist. You may be referring to shepard's pie, which is a pretty rich concoction of mashed potatoes, layered with ground meat, and some sort of non sophisticated " gravy". A historical version would contain all sorts of meats, and be a little less "tame" than our modernized TV dinner version. It is indeed hearty rustic peasant food which , if done with care and good ingredients, can overcome its somewhat urbane label.
: I am looking for a recipe/history for a dish called
: "Checkered Pie". I am told it has it's origin from
: the American south. Could anyone please tell me what
: this dish is?
