: I am looking for a recipe/history for a dish called
: "Checkered Pie". I am told it has it's origin from
: the American south. Could anyone please tell me what
: this dish is?

Well Dunc...not sure if this helps, but I found a recipe for something called chess pie...might this be it?
11/2 cups sugar
1 Tbl+1 tsp cornmeal
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 Tbl white vinegar
1/2 tsp vanilla
3 eggs, beaten
1 unbaked 8 inch pastry shell

combine the first 5 ingredients. stir in eggs; mix thouroughly. pour into pastry shell; bake @ 350 for 50-55 minutes or until done.

There are variations such as chocolate, lemon, and coconut here in southern living annual recipes 1996...e-mail me if you want those...
hope it helps!

Mark
