: I've been thinking about catering for a while, I am starting a casual job with a large local catering firm in a couple of weeks to see if it's really for me. I come from a telco/training background, self employed, but catering/cooking has been a desire of mine since I was 16, I'm now 27 and believe it's now or never.
: What keeps you going in catering? Is is the cooking, meeting people, being self employed? Why did you start in the catering business? Your answers may help me understand my need for it as well. TIA, Kylie, Australia.
Kylie :
What keeps me going is the constant variety and change. Everyday is a new experience, new people, this is not a boring industry! I have gone from Cook to Chef to Restaurant Manager to Caterer to Event Planner.
I find that corporate catering is the most professional clientele you will have and the demands are always great, but whats life without a challenge.
I would recommend you start working with a local caterer to get a good understanding for what it is you're about to commit yourself to. This is a demanding industry so make sure it's what you really want to do and do well. I think I can speak for most professional caterers when I say our worst enemy is a caterer who does not know what they are doing and do a "bad job", because then our clients think it can't be done at all. Good competition is always good for business.
Good Luck with your endeavors!
